Mary Millington was born Mary Ruth Quilter on November 30, 1945, in Kenton, Middlesex, in England. She grew up without her father present and was raised by her single mother, Joan Quilter. Because she was born out of wedlock and raised by her mother alone, Mary faced bullying and low self‑esteem throughout her childhood. These early experiences shaped her sense of self and influenced some of the struggles she faced later in life. She left formal education at age 15 and married Robert Maxted in 1964 when she was still very young. Much of her early adult life was spent caring for her mother, who battled a terminal illness for more than a decade, an emotional and financial burden that would later influence her career decisions.
Mary originally hoped to become a fashion model, but her petite stature at just 4 feet 11 inches made traditional fashion work difficult. Instead, she began working as a glamour model in the late 1960s. A chance introduction to photographer John Jesnor Lindsay led her into adult modelling and appearances in softcore and hardcore film loops that were distributed across Europe. Her early work included modelling for British magazines and appearing in short hardcore films such as “Miss Bohrloch,” which won acclaim on the adult film circuit. Through this work she became known in niche circles and gradually built a following that would grow in the coming years.
In the early 1970s, Mary met publisher and adult magazine producer David Sullivan, who would become a pivotal figure in her career. Sullivan rebranded her under the professional name Mary Millington and began featuring her prominently in his publications. Under his promotion she became a household name in the UK adult world, appearing on magazine covers and starring in softcore films. Her role in the 1977 movie “Come Play with Me” became particularly notable when it went on to run for a record number of weeks at a London cinema, making her one of the most recognizable figures in British adult entertainment.
